3-D radar system installed in Royal navy HMS Queen Elizabeth

LONDON. BAE Systems has finished installing the Artisan 3-D radar system onto the HMS Queen Elizabeth, the future aircraft carrier for the Royal navy. Installation took place late September taking the naval ship a step closer to sea trials.

The Artisan is a 3-D radar system that is capable of detecting small objects that travel three times the speed of sound and more than 25km away, officials say. It will be used to deliver air traffic management.

Engineers at BAE Systems designed and developed the system to monitor more than 800 objects simultaneously from 200 – 200,000 meters as well as cut through radio interference.

“We have already seen the radar perform excellently on the Type 23 frigates and are proud to be able to bring this advanced technology to the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers utilizing its air traffic management capability for the first time,” says Les Gregory, Director for Products and Training Services at BAE Systems.

The Ministry of Defence and Engineers at BAE systems have worked closely over the past two and half years to install the radar system on the HMS Queen Elizabeth. The system was designed and developed at the Cowes, Chelmsford, and Portsmouth sites.
