Counter-UAS capability demonstrated by Lockheed Martin counter-fire radar

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Lockheed Martin?s AN/TPQ-53 counter-fire radar completed a demonstration where the system tracked and identified unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and shared that information with a command and control node.

During the demonstration, the radar identified, tracked, and provided data to the Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control. At the same time, the Q-53 radar provided multi-mission radar (MMR) capabilities by tracking and providing targeting data on rockets, artillery, and mortars.

The Q-53 radar demonstrated it has the ability to provide soldiers with real-time awareness of air threats, says Rick Herodes, Q-53 program director at Lockheed Martin. Its active electronically scanned array (AESA) hardware architecture allows the Q-53’s software to be scalable with emerging threats.

To date, Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 60 systems to the U.S. Army. Officials say the Army expects to award a full-rate production contract this year bringing the system total to more than 170. Work is performed at Lockheed Martin facilities in Syracuse and Owego, New York, Moorestown, New Jersey, and Clearwater, Florida.
