ALAMEDA, Calif. Officials at Wind River released updates to the company's VxWorks 653, which has support for multi-core silicon and partitioning for applications that enable certification to multilevel RTCA DO-178. Wind River also announced support for the Safety Base Profile of Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) 2.1 Technical Standard.

The VxWorks 653 3.0 Multi-core Edition is an ARINC 653-compliant operating environment that was developed specifically to use the advantages of multi-core silicon architectures for greater flexibility, performance, and application consolidation, under strict ARINC 653 avionics software requirements. By using multi-core separations and partitioning, this new consolidation platform enables users to re-use legacy software while expanding their functionality past what could be done with single-core silicon solutions.

The latest version will also enable users to integrate multiple software applications at different levels of safety from multiple application software providers on a shared compute platform.

Separately, the company released Wind River VxWorks 653 2.5 Platform, which supports the ARINC 653 standard and the Safety Base Profile of the FACE Technical Standard 2.1 from the FACE Consortium. The FACE Technical Standard has guidelines for creating a common operating environment for applications across multiple Department of Defense (DoD) avionics systems. VxWorks 653 Platform supports multiple open standards and enables users to choose from a variety of APIs when developing their safety-critical airborne applications.

VxWorks 653 is a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platform for delivering safety-critical, integrated modular avionics (IMA) applications. VxWorks 653 has been used in Airbus and Boeing military and commercial aircraft such as the Airbus A400M and Boeing 787.
