Lockheed Martin selects General Atomics lithium-ion battery system for submersible vehicle

SAN DIEGO, Calif. Lockheed Martin selected General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems' (GA-EMS) Lithium-ion Fault Tolerant (LiFT) battery system to power the U.S. Special Operations Command?s (USSOCOM) Dry Combat Submersible (DCS) propulsion and internal support systems.

Lockheed Martin partnered with Submergence Group, LLC will build and test the DCS, which is a delivery vehicle capable of transporting divers in a dry environment. LiFT provides the energy needed to propel and power the DCS at the distances and depths required to deliver personnel to their mission destination, says Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS.

GA-EMS officials state that the LiFT battery system underwent an at-sea on-hull demonstration testing on a USSOCOM undersea vehicle in April of this year. Paul Clark, senior manager responsible for the LiFT program at GA-EMS, says “We’re now applying this same technology and modular design to create safety certifiable LiFT battery systems for other defense platforms, including ground vehicles and aircraft.”
